Along with Hong Ngu District in the province of Dong Thap, Tan Chau, a town of An Giang Province, is one of the first two places that one mainstream at the last section of Mekong River (Tien River) flows into Vietnam’s territory. This northeastern town of An Giang is about 208km away from Ho Chi Minh City and located in the southwestern part of the country. Tan Chau is the most famous for its distinct local silk product, Lanh My A, whose black color is dyed from the Diospyros Mollis's fruit.
Tan Chau shares the border with Cambodia to the northwest, which made it one of the positions in the upper reaches of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. Sitting along the alluvial fertile river, Tan Chau has amazing riverside sceneries varying from the vibrant town to the lush vegetation and the diverse daily life of the people in the Mekong Delta.
For some Mekong River Cruise downstream itineraries from Phnom Penh to Saigon, tourists will board a speedboat from Cambodia’s capital city to reach Tan Chau, the first stop in Vietnam, after completing the immigration process then start the fabulous river cruise journey here or vice versa for those choosing the upstream itinerary. From the deck, people can admire the stunning views of Mekong Delta’s sceneries and the lively local life on both river banks. There is no better way than rounding the day off on board with a remarkable visual feast of the sun sets over the magnificent water landscape in Tan Chau. In case you’re in the itinerary from luxury categories such as Jahan or Jayavarman Cruise, after reaching Tan Chau you will spend a pleasant half-day tour here to explore the hidden charms in this slow-paced town by a special local vehicle “xeloi” then board on local boats to reach a floating fish farm and get an up-close and personal look at Tan Chau’s floating lives.
