Being the third largest city in Cambodia, Kampong Cham is a peaceful capital of the eponymous province stretched along the banks of the Mekong. Though not a heavily touristed hub in eastern Cambodia and often seen as a nice jump-off point to nearby attractions, this quaint town will allure many travelers who choose to spend a couple of days to explore with its laid-back atmosphere and colonial French charm.
Kampong Cham is a great destination with a harmonious mix of the old and the new. During the French period, Kampong Cham was an important trading post, and the legacy that still exists today is classic French colonial buildings and wide boulevard streets beside the river. Set around that modern beauty is the land of picturesque villages and several pretty Angkorian temples or old ruins. The town is not popular with tourists as Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, but it still houses many worth-visiting places. Nokor Wat dating from the 11th century is an excellent temple to admire the captivating sunset and marvel at the Angkor architecture with elaborate wall paintings about heaven and the afterlife. The wat is also famous for Apsara dances which are mainly held at weekends & holidays from 5 p.m, and performed by the children and teenagers looked after by an NGO located at the temple site. From here, the adventure seekers can take a challenge to the top of Pros and Srei Mountain for a stunning view of lush forest and sleepy river.
Besides, other notable attractions in Kampong Cham that you can take your time to visit are the Bamboo Bridge to Koh Paen island, Wat Maha Leap – one of the few remaining wooden pagodas in Cambodia, the old French lighthouse, and Chup Rubber Plantation for bicycle or motorbike rides. Whether you visit Kampong Cham on a day trip or long stay, the town will definitely offer a slice of the real Cambodia with beautiful landscape, atmospheric wats and friendly people.
